Kingsport's parks and recreation department was awarded a $450,000 grant for park improvements and to help make people healthier. I went to Borden Park to find out more about the new equipment and activities that would be coming.
A Kingsport park is getting much needed improvements thanks to a $450,000 state grant. Borden Park will receive updates to the playgrounds and basketball court.
A walking and biking trail will also be added around the park. The city will partner with other organizations to provide new fitness programs such as yoga, aerobics, and games.
Borden Park was chosen due to its central location and the age of the park. It was built in 1935.
"Our intent is to get more people here: walking, running, biking, playing, so that we can decrease the obesity rate,” said Robin DiMona, assistant director of parks and recreation.
A kids camp will eventually be hosted at the park, for 400 children ages 6 to 12. The project will be completed in phases over the next three years.
