This is my first politics related story at WCYB. Phil Roe announced he would be running for re-election. I wrote two stories: one for the news at 5, one for the news at 6. Each story focused on a different aspect of his campaign.
U.S. Congressman Phil Roe officially kicked off his re-election campaign today. He made the announcement before a crowd gathered at the Johnson City City Hall.
If re-elected, this will be Roe's fifth term as a US representative for Tennessee's first district. Roe said his campaign will focus on several issues including education, healthcare and national security.
"Nobody owns my voting card,” Roe said. “I vote to try to represent the people of northeast Tennessee, and the reason I think I've got their pulse is because I am out with them all the time."
One of the themes of his announcement was healthcare reform.
Roe spoke on a new Republican led healthcare bill that he has helped write. He said the bill would lower costs by reducing regulation. It would repeal the Affordable Care Act.
Roe wants to allow patients to buy the insurance they want and purchase across state lines.
"Our new plan is going to be patient centered,” Roe said. “Hopefully where patients and doctors make healthcare decisions, and we need to lower the costs. The costs are just outrageous now."
Fellow republican Clint Tribble is hoping to unseat Roe in the primary this August. Democrat Alan Bohms and Independent Robert Franklin will also be running.
