Flute Players from Around the World Gather at ETSU

For this story, I went with a videographer to a weeklong flute camp at ETSU. There were many students from different countries who came to learn and perform together. I wrote and did the video editing for this story.

About 30 people were at ETSU’s 33rd annual East Tennessee Suzuki Flute Institute International today.

The weeklong event allows flute players of all ages to come together to learn and perform. They have group lessons each day.

"It's a learning experience for me,” Kevin Smith said. ”I learned how to play better from my friends and from my teachers."

Players from all around the world are attending the event: from Australia, Japan and even Argentina.

Those attending the event say music is an important part of their life.

"It's such a great way just to express yourself,” Andrea Kloehn said. ”Whatever mood you're feeling, there's definitely some sort of piece of music for that."

She’s attending from Minnesota and has played in Argentina.

The players will learn from several instructors this week including the founder of the Suzuki method.

The week concludes with a free concert on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Mathes Hall auditorium.
