An organization that helps people with intellectual disabilities held their grand opening. I attended the ribbon cutting and spoke with the founder. I was also able to see the rooms where the activities were held.
Monday was the grand opening of a new program for adults with intellectual disabilities. Brother's Keeper helps adults with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities to grow through various activities.
"The participants are so excited,” Executive Director Cecile Huddleston said. “I think their eagerness to learn and do more has been so evident."
Huddleston had the idea two years ago when looking for a place for her son after high school.
The activities at Brother's Keeper work on academics, wellness, spiritual growth and life skills. They are customized to each individual and encourage interdependence.
Huddleston said she's seen a lot of progress in the few weeks the program has been going on.
Brother's Keeper is currently housed inside Boones Creek Christian Church. They hope to eventually move into their own building.
