For this report, I headed up to Big Stone Gap to find out about the progress of the town's new visitor's center. It was very difficult to find someone who was able to talk with me about the new visitor's center, but I eventually found a local store owner who was able to get me in touch with the right person.
Work is still ongoing for Big Stone Gap's new visitor center. The visitor center is located inside Carmine's, which was used as a diner in the Big Stone Gap movie, and will promote what the town has to offer.
"We've got great hiking trails,” Vice Mayor Gary Johnson said. “We've got different areas for bike riding. We have the Greenbelt that runs all the way around town that's been utilized by not only just the citizens of Big Stone but other communities.”
The visitor center is currently open Friday through Tuesday, but there is still more to do before the grand opening. Televisions playing the Big Stone Gap movie will be installed inside.
Johnson says the town hopes to have the grand opening sometime this fall but no firm date has been set. Funding is the biggest thing they are working on right now.
