This is one of three stories I reported on after interviewing Congressman Morgan Griffith. He had helped to work on a bill that would provide economic development aid to struggling coal communities.
Coal communities in southwest Virginia could soon be receiving some much needed assistance thanks to the federal government. The Interior Appropriations bill recently passed in the U.S. House.
The bill would provide $10 million to Virginia to encourage economic development. The money would also be used to clean up abandoned mines for reuse.
U.S. Congressman from Virginia Morgan Griffith helped to work on the bill. He says it's receiving support from both sides of the aisle.
"There's no question that our areas in the coal mining region need help on economic development,” Griffith said. “This is a way we can both clean up an environmental problem and work on jobs."
The bill will now move on to the U.S. Senate. Griffith expects it to pass.
