New ATV Trail Now Open in Coeburn

Towns across southwest Virginia were turning to the outdoors for economic development after the loss of jobs in the struggling coal industry. For this story, I attended the ribbon cutting of a new connector trail for ATVs in Coeburn. This story became WCYB's most liked story on Facebook for that day.

There's now another way to enjoy the outdoors in our region. A ribbon cutting was held Friday for a new ATV trail in Coeburn. It connects to the Mountain View Trail in St. Paul.

Now that the new extension is open, ATV drivers can travel between the two towns. They'll also be able to check out a few overlooks along the way.

The trail will also make nature more accessible.

"When you have a disability and you can't hike into the mountains and you can't bike into the mountains, you can ride one of these motorized units," Charlotte Mullins, interim director of Spearhead Trails, said.

The goal is to spur economic development in the coalfield region. One business has already put in a campground.

Construction is also underway for a similar trail in Haysi.
