Kids attending a camp with Johnson City's parks and recreation department went on a field trip to the Erwin Fish Hatchery. I followed along and got to talk with Mitchell, a 10-year-old who thought it was pretty awesome.
Kids today got the chance to learn about plants and animals native to our region during a field trip to the national fish hatchery in Erwin.
"Well, I think it's pretty amazing seeing all the fish and stuff out here,” 10-year-old Mitchell Clark said. “My little brother and my little sister are here and they like it, too."
It's part of the weeklong Wildlife Detectives camp from Johnson City Parks and Recreation.
About 30 kids, ages 7 to 12, got to tour the hatchery. They learned about what the hatchery does and some interesting facts about the fish.
After the tour, the group headed off to Rock Creek to swim and explore. They'll be learning even more about nature tomorrow.
Johnson City's Parks and Recreation Department hosts camps all summer long with a different theme each week.
