During my internship at WCYB, I was with a reporter in Kingsport when we received word that the library had received a large grant to fund major renovations to its children's area. We headed over to find out more and received renderings of what the new area would look like. I wrote, shot, and edited this VO/SOT, which aired on the news at 5.
When completed, the renovated children's area will be nature themed with a stream down the main aisle and forest to the sides. Rendering provided by Helen Whittaker, Kingsport Public Library. |
Children in our area will soon have a new place to read thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Tennessee State Library and Archives. The Kingsport Public Library is using the funds to completely remodel its children's area.
The new space will be nature themed, taking inspiration from Bays Mountain Park. It will feature a stream through the main aisle with a forest theme on the sides and animal decorations.
"We want the children to come to this area and just go, 'Wow!’” Library Manager Helen Whittaker said. “'I want to be here. I want to read. I want to learn.' So that's what we're hoping will happen."
A new room will host the library's “Read to a Dog” program. That program allows children to be less stressed about reading aloud by reading to animals. It is currently located in a room separate from the children’s area.
This will be the first renovation to the children's area in 20 years.
The project is part of a bigger plan to remodel the entire library over the next four years. The library will be bidding out the job at the end of the year.
