Mountain Home National Cemetery announced an expansion of their available grave plots. While at WCYB, I and a videographer headed over to check out the place the expansion would be occurring. We also interviewed the cemetery director about the expansion and what it meant for veterans.
Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City broke ground Wednesday on a 15-acre expansion. It's the first of three phases of the project.
Once all phases are completed, the expansion will double the size of the cemetery. It will provide gravesites for veterans for the next 50 years.
"We have veterans from all wars represented at Mountain Home,” Director Jeny Walker said. “We're glad to provide that service. We will always have veterans from every single war."
Cemetery administration buildings will be moving to the expansion area. Construction begins on Monday.
Walker said the expansion will allow them to continue to serve veterans.
Enough gravesites for the next ten years will be available after the first phase of the project. It should be completed by November of next year.
