Visitation Held for WWII POW Whose Remains Were Recently Returned Home

A World War II POW's remains had been identified and returned home after over 70 years. His family held an open visitation all day. They welcomed a videographer and myself to the visitation. I interviewed his niece, who was happy that he was being honored on the news.

The family of Private Evens Overbey held a visitation Thursday at Valley Funeral Home in Erwin.

Overbey died during World War II in a prisoner camp in the Philippines. His remains were returned to the Tri-Cities Tuesday after DNA testing allowed him to be identified late last year.

Several police officers and veterans attended the visitation.

Although she never met him, Overbey's niece talked about how much it meant that his body was returned.

"It means a lot,” his niece Grace Erwin said. “I mean, he's been gone for 70-some years, and it was just so good to have him back home."

The visitation was 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Thursday.

Overbey will be laid to rest Friday at the Mountain Home National Cemetery”at 2:30 p.m. Governor Bill Haslam has ordered flags at half-staff all day Friday to honor Overbey.
