TVA had begun its routine testing of dams in our region. I talked with a spokesperson by phone to find out what it meant for our area, why the tests were being done and what all they entailed.
The Tennessee Valley Authority began routine testing Monday on several dams in our region. Beaver Creek and Clear Creek dams in Bristol, Virginia are the focus of the check.
TVA is drilling sample holes and conducting other tests to look for evidence of seeping water.
"A dam safety check similar to those that are occurring at Beaver Creek and Clear Creek was what allowed us to very quickly find the problem at the Boone embankment and get that project underway,” TVA Spokesperson Jim Hopson said. He said the checks are important to spot problems early.
The testing work will continue over the next six weeks.
TVA says the testing should not interfere with activities nearby.
