Abingdon's 68th Virginia Highlands Festival kicked off with a series of events. While interning with WCYB, I was to report on vintage plane rides being offered. Those plane rides ended up being postponed a day due to weather, so instead I checked out the vendors downtown. I interviewed one who had been there for over a decade. I even got to eat an awesome doughnut at the festival.
The 68th annual Virginia Highlands Festival is officially underway. More than 80 vendors gathered Friday in downtown Abingdon.
There are a variety of arts and crafts available including jewelry, pottery, woodworking and photography. You can also try some tasty food like kettle corn and doughnuts.
Jamie Estes has been selling her soaps at the festival for at least 12 years. She said the people are what makes it so special.
"It's just a really busy time for the community and lots of fun things out there to do,” Estes said. “It's a great draw."
There are more events planned for the festival including plane rides, music and walking tours. The festival continues through August 7.
