Water Line Bursts on Campus

I was leaving the communications building at Milligan College from class one day when I saw water shooting up into the sky. Luckily, I had my camera in hand to take some pictures. I was able to gather some information about what was going on, which happened to be repairs to a leaky water pipe. The water pressure was too high and had caused the burst during repair. Ten minutes later I had typed up a quick report, and it was posted to the Stampede Online.

Update (Friday 11:30 a.m.):

Derthick Loop was still closed at midday Friday. Tony Stout, a contractor working on the project, said they are currently cleaning up after having repaired the broken pipe. He and his crew had shovels and a dump truck and were filling the hole with gravel.

Stout said Derthick Loop would likely reopen later this afternoon depending on whether Ken Broyles, facilities service manager, decides to dig up the rest of the pipe today or on a day with better weather.

The Stampede called Broyles for comment. We are waiting for his response and will provide you with more information as it becomes available.

Original story (Thursday 3:30 p.m.):

A water line burst on campus Thursday afternoon while Milligan crews worked to repair a leak. Crews were working along Derthick Loop behind the science building.

Ken Broyles, facilities service manager, said the line had been leaking for several months, but with all the snow and rain, they were unable to find the leak. The dry and sunny weather on Wednesday allowed them to find the running water.

Broyles said the crew will be installing a band clamp to stop the leak. The hole will be filled with gravel temporarily, and it will be paved over this summer.

It is expected that Derthick Loop will reopen to traffic today. Broyles said the leak will end up costing Milligan several thousand dollars.
