This is the first story that I did at WCYB that I actually pitched. I also wrote, reported, and edited the video. WCYB ended up being the only news organization with the story of what would be moving into the Bonnie Kate.
The first tenant of a soon-to-be restored theater has been announced. Sugar Love Bakery and Café will be moving into the Bonnie Kate Theatre building in Elizabethton by September.
Renovation work is underway inside the building. They only have flooring and cosmetic work left to do before the restaurant and bakery can open.
The business will also help take some of the pressure off the city by paying for basic costs like utilities.
"It's been part of the community,” City Manager Jerome Kitchens said. “A lot of people have enjoyed various events in there. We think that we can make it an important part of the community again."
Kitchens said the restaurant will enhance the appeal of the building.
“As a girl, I spent many weekends making memories at the Bonnie Kate,” Shonna Peters, Sugar Love owner, said. “It’s a dream come true.”
The business will provide a full service bakery and a restaurant open for lunch and dinner.
Renovation work will continue on the building after Sugar Love moves in. Fundraising is currently underway to pay for the project.
