Fundraising Underway for Steele Creek Nature Center

This is a follow up on Steele Creek Park's plan for an expanded nature center. In a previous story written by someone else at WCYB, the park had started work on expanding the building. In this story, I found out what exhibits were planned for the inside and how it would help the nature center with it's mission.

Community members are hoping your donations can help improve the Nature Center at Steele Creek Park. The Friends of Steele Creek Park are trying to raise $250,000 to fund the project.

The money will go toward creating new exhibits at the center, while updating existing ones. They also want to increase programs and purchase new research equipment.

When completed, the center will be nearly three times its current size.

"We're looking to have an interactive geology area with a cave exhibit,” Jeremy Stout, nature center manager, said. “(We’ll) also interpret the role that beaver's play in our area and have a beaver lodge that kids will be able to touch and maybe even crawl inside of."

The amount of money raised will decide what kind of exhibits the center can add.

$5,000 has already been raised from members of the Friends of Steele Creek, said Sonie Schermer, who is heading the fundraising committee.

The project should be completed by the end of the year. They are hoping to have a grand opening in the spring.

Donations can be made by picking up an envelope at the nature center, Bristol Tennessee City Hall or the Bristol Public Library. You can also donate at www.friendsofsteelecreek.org.
